Misao and Fukumaru. “We will never be apart.”

12 years ago, Japanese photographer, Miyoko Ihara (伊原　美代子) started to take photographs of her grandmother, Misao. Born in 1981 in Chiba (Japan), Miyoko Ihara has studied under Kenji Higuchi (樋口健二), after graduating from the Press Photography Course at the Nippon Photography Institute in 2002. Miyoko is also a member of The Photographic Society of Japan.”

“Under the sun, everyday is a good day. Another good day, Fukumaru”, Misao. Eight years ago, Misao found a odd-eyed kitten in the shed. She named the cat “Fukumaru” in hope that “God of fuku” (good fortune) comes and everything will be smoothed like a “maru” (circle)”.

“We’ll never be apart!”, says Misao to Fukumaru. Both of them live in a tiny world, with dignity, with mutual love. Still today, under the blue sky, Misao and Fukumaro work in the fields and in these natural surroundings, where they shine like the stars.”

Anna Atkins (1799-1871) was an English botanist and photographer. She is often considered the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images.

Anna was raised by her father, who was a scientist of many interests. Her detailed engravings of shells were used to illustrate her father’s translation of Lamarck’s Genera of Shells, which was published in 1823.She married John Pelly Atkins in 1825, and she pursued her interests in botany by collecting dried plants.

Sir John Herschel, a friend of Anna, invented the cyanotype photographic process in 1842. Within a year, Anna applied the process to algae (specifically, seaweed) by making cyanotype photograms that were contact printed “by placing the unmounted dried-algae original directly on the cyanotype paper”. Anna self-published her photograms in the first installment of Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions in October 1843. She produced a total of three volumes of Photographs.

Tsunami Clouds

A series of huge breaking waves lined the horizon in Birmingham, Ala., last December, but they were in the sky, not the ocean. The incredible cloud formations were pristine examples of “Kelvin-Helmholtz waves,” which develop when a fast-moving layer of fluid slides on top of a slower, thicker layer, dragging its surface and causing crests of the thick layer to lurch forward.

I think I just fell head-over-heels in love (or at least “really strong like”) with Bunpei Yorifuji’s Wonderful Life With The Elements book. Each element becomes a character, giving a cartoonish face to their particular chemical properties. Sure, some aren’t wearing pants … but minerals do as minerals want (peek through the book preview if you don’t believe me).

Periods are divided by their odd haircut choices, and the age of the element since discovery via facial hair. Other physical and chemical characteristics are evident by attire and appearance. If you’re looking for an early Christmas present for your favorite science blogger, just go ahead and put it in the mail with my name on it.

So wonderful.
